Since Newfoundland is an island, various types of ships are found in its vicinity. Used for various purposes, from pleasure to business, these ships add culture and character to the province.
Dory Boat
These water floating vessels scatter throughout bays and outports of Newfoundland, not to mention backyards. Made of either wood or fiberglass, these boats provide transportation, and aid fisher people throughout the fishing season. Paddles or motors are used to move the boat, although these days you can never be too careful. One should be equipped with both in case the motor gives out. The last situation one wants to occur while fishing is to be stranded on the water without a way to get ashore because the motor has given out! While in a dory, always be very prepared as Quoyle should already know!

Personal Yacht
Used primarily for pleasure and relaxation,
the personal yacht enables one to sail comfortably from port to port. With
yacht clubs in various Newfoundland locations, such as Manuels and Holyrood,
large numbers of people can congregate to discus their similar interest
of boating. Some boats are very modest, while others can be quite extravagant,
such as the couple in The Shipping News. These boats and clubs add
to the culture of Newfoundland society.

Freighter
A freight boat simply carries cargo and goods from the place of export to that of import. This freighter may not be unlike those used in Newfoundland years ago. Being an isolated island the only way to access exports was by boat. In present day, freighters are still used to transport goods to various part of Newfoundland and Labrador
